Bentley's Buds Great Dane Rescue

Adoption Process

1) Talk over with your entire family the idea of adopting a new forever pet. Discuss the pros and cons. Determine that you have enough time, enough room, that your home will allow a new dog FOREVER. You will also need to exercise, play with and LOVE. Figure out the expense a Great Dane can bring to your home. You MUST feed a high quality dog food, you may require a trainer's help to get past some road blocks that may come along the way, due to size vet bills are somewhat larger. Danes are at risk for torsion and bloat which can be a quick and deadly problem not to mention it can run around $1000+ for surgery. Heartworm prevention is also needed, as well as a back up fund for any unexpected illness or injury. Potty training may be necessesary and takes time and patience. You will also want to consider others living in the house (children, elderly, other pets) and how they will intereact with the new pet. Another thing to consider is vehicle room... do you have room for all of your family members and a full grown Great Dane? One of the most important questions to ask yourself is "Can you give this pet the love and attention he/she needs throughout his/her life?"  There are many factors to consider with the addition of a new family member. After you have evaluated every factor and you and your family have decided a Great Dane is the right fit for your family, go to step 2.

2) Fill out the Great Dane adoption application completely and honestly. If you have an animal neglect/cruelty charge please notify us. We conduct a neglect/cruelty check and you will be immediately denied for failure to provide information. We want honest applicants. If you have a question please ask us. If a question does not apply make sure a N/A is in the blank. All blank questions will need to be resubmitted. We will also need e-mail addresses and/or phone numbers of references.

3)After we recieve your application we will review it and contact you back with any questions we may have. This is not a rapid process so if you are in a rush to bring a dog into your home do not expect that we will hurry the application process, we carefully examine the dog's attributes with the potential family to find a perfect fit.

4)As long as everything is going well with the application we will ask that you send us a photo home tour(the more photographs the better) of all the places your potential adoptive dog will be, also pictures of your current pets, and a photo walk through with information on what your adoptive dogs routine would be like, you may also include pictures of your family if you would like. We also may request a written step by step of what an average day in your household is like. From there we will set up a meet and greet. This is the opportunity for you to meet the dog or dogs and get to know them. After we recieve the photographic home visit and information we will notify you of any comments, questions, or concerns.

5)From there we will set up an appointment to view the home in which the dog will be spending the rest of his/her life. At this appointment we will inform you of anything that might need to be corrected in order to continue on with the process, such as putting up a proper fence, or safety concerns. Don't feel that you need to hide anything we're not coming to pass judgement on your decor, but simply to ensure that you have the space and the facilities to keep a Great Dane, or to show you what things will need puppy proofing. At this visit we will go over our adoption options, contracts, and answer any questions that you may have.

6)After any issues have been resolved we will set up an appointment for you to get together and have some bonding time with the dog to see how well the family and dog match with each other and give you time to get to know the dog and make 100% sure it is the right one for you. We call this the Final Meet and Greet.

7)Next we bring the dog into your home for an hour or so to make sure he/she adapts well. Basic behavior of the dog is monitored i.e. How they react to your flooring, stairs, children, other pets, and go over more info about the dogs amazing traits and things that may require some TLC.

8) If all of the previous steps go according to plan we will conduct the final appointment in which we will bring the dog into your home, monitor them for the last time, complete adoption agreement paperwork, go over any questions comments or concerns. If all goes well and the dog has adjusted nicely we will accept the adoption donation and turn over ownership of the dog "till death do you part."

There are certain scenerios where the steps do not follow in this exact order. This is a basic guide, BBGDR and it's officers can terminate or change the adoption process at any time. The adoption process can be a very personal process. Our goal in adoption is to find the 100% PERFECT home for that dog. Therefore we want to get to know you and build a relationship with you. We expect new owners to count on us for support, to share stories with us, to come to us when they need help or have a question, and so much more. Our involvement does not stop with a completed adoption. We have made a lifelong commitment to these animals and we expect the same dedication from new owners as well.

ADOPTION FEES: Our adoption fees for a purebred Great Dane start at $175, for older danes 6 and up. 5 and under start at $275. 1 year and under start at $300.

We base our adoption fee on our average medical cost. It is $200 (min) for us to get them neutered and $230 or more to get them spayed, the medicine they use to control the pain after surgery is $21.58 for a 100lb dog, rabies is $18.00, Distemper is $30, Bordetella is $20, about $28.78 for revolution per month, de-worm varies by weight, and heartworm tests/or treatment. So our bare minimum investment in one dog is $318.36. If they come to us spay/neutered (which rarely happens) then the minimum cost is $118.36. Usually they are low on body weight, have infections, and/or have other health problems which requires further medical attention. Not to mention the food is about $50 a bag, plus toys, crates, beds, nail trims, baths, ear cleanings, daycare, our attention, potty training, clean-up, time, love, and all the other great stuff that comes along with rescueing a dog. When you think about it isn't that donation worth it so BBGDR can save another life.
